Protecting your Place

high-ranking search engine placements increase traffic to your site. After your site has been submitted and listed with the 15 major search engines, and 4 to 6 weeks have past, it's time to view the placement results. Because of the optimized hidden fields of your webpages, some of your pages will rank high in some search engines. In other engines they will not rank high. It will depend on the preferences of each particular search engine. Your pages will not please all of the search engines all of the time. Where do you go from here to enhance the lower search engine rankings, to protect your existing high rankings and to steer traffic toward your site? Here are some options to consider.

  • Doorway Pages
  • Additional Webpages
  • Ongoing Search Engine Submission
  • Remodeling Main Pages and Doorway Pages
  • Dummy Domains with Keywords in Title

Doorway Pages

A well-designed webpage must balance style and content in order to interest to potential clients. Its hidden fields must also be optimized without adversely effecting the appeal of the page. But in order to impress some of the search engine spiders and robots, visual appeal must be sacrificed to further optimize keywords and phrases. A webpage that has been designed to maximize specific keywords and phrases has a much better chance of achieving a high rank in search engines, but a maximized page is not the kind of page that can hold a visitor’s interest. It is visually boring and holds little more that keywords and phrases for content. A high rank is essential in bringing traffic to your webpage, but increased traffic won't generate clients if the webpage is not appealing!

So what can be done to bring visitors to your site and to hold them there? The solution is a combination of two pages: a maximized webpage (a doorway page) and a web page that is able hold visitors' attention (the webpages of your web site). How can this be done? By keeping the stylish content pages of your main site and utilizing "doorway" pages. A doorway page is another name for a maximized page - one that has been saturated with a specific keyword or phrase. A doorway page ranks high in searches. It gathers the potential clients and redirects them to your web site.

Each search engine has different likes and dislikes, which means that a unique doorway page should be made for each keyword for each of the major search engines in which your webpages have not ranked between 1 and 20. For example, let's say you have three major keyword phrases that potential clients

might use to search for you. In order to submit an effective doorway page to each of the major search engines for each of your keyword phrases, you would need 45 doorway pages (3 x 15). In order to keep keyword guessing and doorway page generation to a minimum, data exist that will need to be analyzed to determine which keywords and phrases to maximize.

Additional Webpages

Adding more content and more pages to your site can increase traffic and boost search engine rankings. Many search engines prefer large sites because the content is more likely to hold value to their visitors. Also, the more pages submitted to the search engines the better the odds are that your web site will show up in a potential client's search.

Ongoing Search Engine Submission

Like the main webpages of your site, the doorway pages must be "submitted for an update" to each search engine once a month. Submitting your main pages and your doorway pages is essential in achieving and protecting a high rank. Search engines will send their spiders out periodically to update their listings, but the majority of the updating is done with several months in-between. Competitors are submitting their pages once a month and then looking to see where they have ranked on the list. They are trying to improve their rank and they are determined to boot your site out of the way. Asking the spiders to revisit your site by submitting your pages every 30 days is the minimum that must be done to preserve your listing and your rank.

Remodeling Main Pages and Doorway Pages

If you are satisfied with the rank of your main pages and/or doorway pages, you can sit back, relax and submit the pages once a month. When the pages begin to fall, it's time to remodel your site and refresh those doorway pages. What makes pages fall in rank? Smart competition. The competition looks at your site and your doorway pages to try to figure out what you did to get a high rank. (Can't blame them. We do the same thing!) Then they do what you did. Then they do it better. Then we do it better. That's the nature of search engine placement competition. Generally, main pages and doorway pages can be remodeled. When your placement is slipping, and when your visitors aren't turning into clients, remodeling is necessary.

Dummy Domains with Keywords in the Title

Obtaining a domain name with your keywords in the title can significantly increase your search engine rank. For the price of a few doorway pages, you can buy a domain name, park the domain and then use it like an optimized doorway page to redirect traffic to your site. The advantage of owning a dummy domain name is that you won't ever need to remodel it. Remember that domain names must be renewed periodically, typically every 2 years.
